Our “Inspiration Feeder” presents to you short interviews with interesting visual artists from around the globe. Today in focus: Niko Photographisme.
How old are you?
I’m 38 (no easy to make more than one sentence)
Where do you come from?
I’m from France. I live in the north west coast near the sea, in Bretagne. Really nice region.
How long have you been doing photography?
I make some images since 10 years. I have learned by myself. At the beginning I worked on free stocks images to manipulated Photoshop. But I quickly wanted to work on my own pictures so I bought little basic camera and I tried to modified landscape and object pictures. Then I wanted to experiment with models. It was not easy to find models who accept to work on surreal images without a portfolio. So I started with friends.
How would you define your style?
I’m not a real photographer because I have learned by myself with lowly equipment and I always wanted to make images which represent impossible, surrealist, funny stuff. I like to modify the reality. For that I use Photoshop but it’s not the main goal, it’s just a tool to help me to tall my stories. Well it’s that, Maybe I am more a storyteller with modest skills and equipment than a real photographer.
How long do you think it took you to find your personal style of shooting?
I build my own style since the beginning. I experimented lots of thing. I could say I always do most of things by myself, I’m a real DIY artist haha.
Seriously, I build in my garage my own mechanical props for the Robot Next Project with old stuff I can find. I build all accessories as possible for my other projects, I really like that and I think we can see it on my photos. Beside I think I like cinematographic style. It’s not conscious but my pictures (specially The Robot Next Door) have a kind of movie style. I’m happy because I can work on really different subjects like beach/pollution themes with bright colors, warm vibes, outdoor scenes etc. or indoor sceneries, more cold and grey and worrying issues. But in both cases I think we can recognize my style. I hope at least.
What would you say is the thing that most inspires you? / What is your main source of inspiration?
I like science fiction story, movies, tv shows etc. and I like to observe our world, how it’s goes on, problems, fears or what make us happy. I’m try to work with emotions. And I think I’m a dreamer. All that inspires me.
